Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant. Genesis 18:4-5
When God came to Abraham’s house, Abraham might have sensed the heaviness(weight) of God’s heart. So instead of asking for his own unfulfilled promise (regarding Issac), he tried to provide God some rest and a place to refresh his heart. Abraham might have sensed the heaviness and anguish of God’s heart because of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. For example – Sodom and Gomorrah had around 50000 people and for each person God would shed at least 1 litre of tears, i.e. in total 50000 litre of tears for entire city. God came to Abraham with a burden or tears of 50000 litres. It was in a state of thick and dense darkness with which God came to Abraham.
Abraham sensed the thick darkness surrounding God like an envelope. So, Abraham said to God – rest yourselves under the tree and refresh your hearts. Abraham understood the heaviness of God’s heart and tried to provide God some rest and refresh his heart. Because of the unfulfilled promise, Abraham was weary for 24 years and in dire need of rest. However, when God comes, he forgets his own weariness and becomes a resting place for God.
God was about to pass judgement on a city with at least 50000 people. Imagine how much burden or strain that God was carrying or bearing. God’s heart was very heavy. With this heavy and sorrowful heart God came to visit Abraham. Abraham understood the intensity or depth of the anguish of God’s heart. The heaviness (or anguish) because of passing judgement on a city with 50000 people. Imagine how much commotion if one person died? In this instance, 50,000 people are losing their lives.
Jesus tells in Matthew 10:30 that even the hairs on your head are numbered, which is a metaphor for God’s omniscience and perfect care. This verse shows how much God loves and values you, it communicates that he is aware of every detail about you, including the ones that seem unimportant and insignificant. It implies that God is concerned in every little aspect of your existence. God cares even for the smallest details of your life.
A God who loves and cares (so much) for each and every one of you is ready to pass a judgement that will kill 50000 people – how deeply His heart would have been troubled or disturbed. Such a loving God is going to destroy people – how much God’s heart might be troubled. Love is personality of God and to show judgement is his last nature. With this heavy heart, God came to Abraham. Abraham understood the great depth of agony and anguish of God’s heart and realized that God needed rest. 24 years waiting for God’s promise (regarding Issac), prepared him understood the anguish and heaviness of God’s heart.
Did we anytime recognise the depth of agony and anguish of God’s heart? Before every destruction, God is deeply troubled and burdened. He is looking for people to rest, before every destruction or devastation. Do you want to become a resting place for God? Plead with God let you become one.
This season a lot of people will have visitations from God, where God will come to us in the same manner that he visited Abraham. God will come physically as the Triune God. This is because lot of calamities are about to come in this season. Many people may perish in each calamity. God’s heart is very much troubled because of death of many people. God needs a place to rest and a resting place to take comfort. Because God needs a place to rest, he is looking for people like Abraham where he can rest.
Abraham had a visitation because God’s heart had to be soothed, comforted and refreshed. One of the reasons why God visits us is because his heart needs to be comforted due to the coming disasters. It had nothing to do with you or your problems. He wants someone to pray and intercede for the impending disaster. The burden of passing judgement to 50000 people (in Sodom and Gomorrah) caused deep grieving in the heart of God.
All these years, God might have comforted your heart, but we are about to enter a season where we will be comforting God and providing him rest. He will come physically to visit, and we need to provide him rest. Imagine how much heavy (and burdened) God’s heart must be to destroy a city of 50000 people (in Sodom). These days are days of tremendous tragedy and God is finding people where he can rest. Your visitation depends on you becoming the resting place of God. Be ready and start preparing with the help of the Holy Spirit to become a resting place for God. God is about to come physically to visit you.
