TS304 – Comforting God

God comes in all His brokenness to the most broken person and expects the most broken person to comfort him. The most broken person cannot really (or truly) comfort God, but He still comes to him. The most broken person himself needs some comfort, but he is in a situation where he has to comfort God. This is one the most Incomprehensible (Impossible to understand or grasp) divine dilemma.

God finds comfort in the company of broken person. He came to the Samaritan women and expected her to give him some water. Jesus never asked anyone for anything or showed his state of need to anyone. But to the Samaritan women He showed His needy state and asked for water. Here, the thirst is spiritual rather than physical water. The Samaritan was herself broken and in no way able to comfort/provide for anyone else. But Jesus expected her to provide some water. Jesus might have easily asked for water from someone like the Pharisees. In the company of Samaritan women, Jesus was very comforted.

In Genesis 18, God (in his most broken state) comes to Abraham and finds rest in Abraham’s tent. God was about to destroy Sodom, a city which had around 50000 people and before he destroys Sodom, he came to Abraham. Can you imagine the extent to which God’s heart might be broken because of the destruction of Sodom? God came to Abraham’s tent with a great deal of brokenness. Abraham was going through a very difficult broken phase in his life – 23-24 years of unfulfilled promise and he himself was weary and desperately needed comfort. But here God comes in all his brokenness and Abraham (in spite of his brokenness) had comforted God.

Our brokenness and broken situations attract God. God is drawn to our brokenness and broken situations. God is compatible with broken people because God himself is broken. Brokenness is one of the characteristics of God. A broken God can easily get along with broken people, just as birds of the same feather flock together.

Today, if you are broken or going through broken situations, it’s for a reason and purpose. It’s to make you a person who can comfort God (in spite of your own brokenness). He wants you to become a resting place for him where He can come and take rest. He wants to sit and dine with you. You cannot provide something good or perfect for God, but your company provides rest to God. Talking with you provides rest to God. Most of the time, when God speaks to you, you find comfort and rest. Did it happen anytime that you speak to God and God found rest and comfort because of you?

In Genesis 18:4-5, Abraham was trying to provide God a place to rest (or becoming a resting place) and refresh. He was trying to provide God a place to rest, forgetting his own unfulfilled promises. Maybe spending time with Abraham refreshed God. Perhaps God was rejuvenated by spending time with Abraham. Did you ever feel refreshed by your time with God? Did your spending time with God refresh God anytime? Did your spending time with God refresh you only and not God. Become people who can refresh God and, in your company, let God be refreshed.
