And Hezekiah answered, “It is an easy thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees; no, but let the shadow go backward ten degrees.” So, Isaiah the prophet cried out to the Lord, and He brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down on the sundial of Ahaz. 2 Kings 20:10-11
For showing a sign that God can heal and extend the life of Hezekiah, God made the shadow on the sundial of Ahaz go backward by ten degrees.
Moving the shadow backward means that the sun’s planetary motion had to be stopped and reversed. The rotation that governs our days was reversed, causing time to move backward. For the sake of one man, the Creator paused the clock of the world and reversed it for some time. The entire universe was affected by it.
This reveals something about who God is. He is not subject to time; He is Lord over it. God moved time backward to show that – He still has sovereign control of time. He can move it forward or backward as He pleases. If He can move it backward, He can also reverse what has already happened, undoing what nature and history have settled. He can even make things as though they had never occurred. God has sovereign control of time
This is God’s reversing nature. God can reverse the things that have already happened as if they have not happened. Time went back by some minutes or seconds for Hezekiah’s sake. If God can do it for Hezekiah’s sake, he can also do it for us. Time is in his hands, and he can reverse or accelerate it. He is sovereign enough to control time.
