TS354 – What do you do when you hear the footsteps of God

“Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.” (Exodus 33:11)

The camp had gone quiet. Every man in Israel had closed his day. But Moses was only beginning his.

He lifted the flap of the Tent of Meeting and stepped into the dark. All day he had prepared for this hour, and now he stood alone in the silence, waiting.
Then the air changed. A weight pressed on the tent walls, as though heaven were leaning down. The cloud had come.

And he heard it: footsteps.
Slow. Unhurried. Each step landed with a weight that rested on the ground itself. The God who had parted the sea and shaken Sinai was walking toward him.

His heart pounded in his chest, his throat, his hands. He had stood before Pharaoh without fear, yet here, with nowhere to hide, he trembled. He was known completely: his stammering, his doubts, his secret tears for a stubborn people. And still the footsteps kept coming, steady and tender.

That was the wonder that undid him. The God before whom mountains smoked was approaching a man in the dark the way a friend approaches a friend. Moses had spent the whole day preparing his heart, but the preparation had never summoned God. God had been coming all along. The footsteps were grace.

The sound stopped. Moses felt the nearness like warmth on his face.
“Moses.”
“Here I am.”

And you?
If you heard the footsteps of God entering your room tonight, what would you do?

You would not rehearse your words. You would not hide your failures or dress up your prayers. You would do what Moses did: stand still, let your heart pound, and answer with the only words that matter.
Here I am

The truth is, God is already coming. The footsteps are heard in every quiet hour you set aside, in every night you choose stillness over noise. You do not have to earn his coming.

You only have to be present when he arrives. So tonight, when the world closes its day, open yours to him. Be still. Listen.

He is walking toward you.
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)
