TS347 – Pursuing God in the wilderness

O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1

When David penned this psalm, he was in the wilderness of Judah, when he was likely fleeing Saul or Absalom. His wilderness was both physical and spiritual: a barren landscape outside, and a season of uncertainty within.

Yet notice how David lived there. He did not drift or give in to despair. He lived with discipline, rising early to seek the Lord and keeping a steady rhythm of prayer. The dry and desolate place did not decrease his hunger for God; it sharpened it. Everything around him was out of order, but his pursuit of God only grew deeper.

David was not disappointed or depressed by the wilderness. Instead, the wilderness became the very place where his longing for God increased or intensified. The wilderness increased his desire to pursue God.

So let me ask you: what are you doing in your wilderness? Are you living a disciplined life of pursuing God, or have you given way to disappointment and discouragement? Start pursuing God right where you are, in the wilderness.
